Reverend William Walter Vaughan, Vicar of Llandegley

The Parish of Llandegley lies in Radnorshire in south Wales. The parish church is St Tecla's and for many years Walter William Vaughan, a brother-in-law to Stephen Wilson Kinsey, was the rector.

Little had been known about Walter up until now. However, a recently discovered news article and a listing in a cleric's directory have helped shed some new light onto his livelihood.

First, there is the 1885 Crockford's Clerical Directory for the UK:

From it we can garner that Walter graduated from St David's College in Lampeter in 1854. By '56 he had become a deacon, and then in '58 he is ordained as a priest by the Bishop of St David's.

He first worked as a chaplin of Steynton, Pembrokeshire from 1856-59. He then served in Castle-Caereinion from 1860-61 before his assignment in Llandegley.

Walter therein became the vicar of Llandegley in 1862 and served their until his death in 1892. There he lived in the vicarage in Penybont with his wife, Elizabth Ann.

An earlier article on the re-opening of the parish church in Llandegley provides further insight into his life in 1876. This article is from the 8 December 1876 Western Mail:

Walter William Vaughan passed away in Llandegley on 5 March 1892 at age 59.
